Agenda for Change

Agenda for Change is about providing consistent development opportunities and ensuring that personnel have achieved the necessary knowledge and skills required to perform their role. The advantage of this is that for the first time training requirements for unqualified support staff will have to be taken seriously by Trusts, Line Managers and Phlebotomists as without the supporting knowledge there will be career or pay progression.

We appreciate that many of you will have received your bandings; some of you will be disappointed in the decisions that have been made.  If you are not happy with the banding that you have received you need to consider the following.

bulletDid you agree and sign your job description?
bulletDid you fully understand the implications and importance of a fully detailed Job Description?
bulletHave you attended briefing sessions that have been available within your Trust?
bulletHave you discussed the decision with your line Manager?
bulletDo you have the knowledge and skills and perform to support grading at a higher level?

If you feel that you have been incorrectly banded you need to do the following:

bulletDiscuss all aspects of your job description, knowledge, skills and levels of responsibility with you line Manager as step one.
bulletWith the support of your line Manager submit your appeal clearly stating at which points you feel you were under scored on, to the Agenda for Change Team within your Trust.
bulletIf your Line Manager satisfactory explains the reasons why you would not be successful in the appeal process there would be little point in proceeding further.
bulletShould your line Manager be unable to convince you that you have been assessed correctly you should contact your Union Representative.

The National Association of Phlebotomists are continually communicating with the Department of Health to broaden the scope of Practice for Phlebotomists into Canulation, Training, Management, multi-disciplinary A&E support workers, community near patient testing and specialist paediatric areas.  Opportunities should be discussed with your Line Manager at yearly appraisal meetings.  Career progression has to be worked at, think about what you what from your career and plan how you feel this can be achieved prior to your appraisal we feel sure your Manager will assist you if at all possible.
